Archaeological Excavation
Ed Jelks, Chuck Rohrbaugh, and teams of graduate students have begun to excavate the yard behind the 1882 Charles Cantine House. There are a number of notable features in the yard including at least two privies and a large depression which may be the result of a small building or other structure. The yard has been divided into a grid and the digging has begun. Any artifacts that are recovered from the site will be examined, documented, and eventually displayed in the Education Center.
We are looking for volunteers to help with the excavation this spring. No experience is necessary, simply email us (volunteer@oldhousesociety.org) for more information.
Stage 1 - The GridThe entire yard is divided into a grid. This will allow us to precisely locate artifacts that we recover. A precise map is drawn and each major feature is plotted. The large depression in the center of the yard will be Feature 1. Click the photos to enlarge them. |
