Volunteer

Volunteers are a critical part of the Old House Society. From salvaging to helping research and publish our books, there are lots of volunteering opportunities. Position

Description

Salvage

Responsibilities: Removing trim, flooring, cabinetry, doors and other items of interest prior to their demolition.
Time commitment: A 3-hour shift on Saturday (9-12 or 12-3), when a house is available.
Qualifications: No experience necessary.
Training: Will occur on site as needed

Restoration

Responsibilities: Varies with the interests and skills of the volunteer, but may include repairing wood, glass, and masonry items; cleaning and stripping paint; and finding new uses for old materials. Can you build a bookcase from old doors? Contact us!
Time commitment: Flexible.
Qualifications: Experience working with wood, glass, masonry is helpful, but not required.
Training: As needed.

Warehouse

Responsibilities: Sorting and organizing salvage materials in our Warehouse. This is a great way to see lots of the inventory and get a great workout!
Time commitment: Flexible during open hours (Friday and Saturday 9-5).
Qualifications: No experience necessary, some physical lifting.
Training: Not required.

Store / Retail

Responsibilities: Working at the sales counter in the Warehouse on Douglas Street selling items to customers and assisting with general questions.
Time commitment: A 3-hour shift during open hours (Friday and Saturday 9-5).
Qualifications: No experience necessary.
Training: Will include an information packet covering most frequently asked questions and orientation to cash register.

Clerical

Responsibilities: Various light data-entry tasks on one of our office computers.
Time commitment: Flexible
Qualifications: No experience necessary.
Training: As needed with task.

Fundraising

Responsibilities: Building relationships with donors, grant writing, etc.
Time commitment: Flexible
Qualifications: Some previous fundraising or related experience preferred.
Training:
Not available.

Books

Responsibilities: Research, writing, photography, layout and/or publishing of books produced by Old House Society such as Picturesque Bloomington.
Time commitment: Varies. May be 1-2 hour project or can be working on an entire book from start to finish.
Qualifications: Previous experience or strong interest in photography, computers, graphic design or publishing preferred.
Training: Not available.

Awards

Responsibilities: Coordinating Gift to the Street Awards including reviewing applications, producing plaques, planning and assisting with awards ceremony.
Time commitment: 2-3 hours at ceremony or ongoing for planning.
Qualifications: Interest in local history.
Training: Not required.

Tours

Responsibilities: Giving tours of homes, taking tickets, creating signs during semi-annual homes tour.
Time commitment: A 3-hour shift during the hours that the tour is operating.
Qualifications: No experience necessary.
Training: Offered prior to event, as needed.
