for Preservation Education
A guide to degree-granting historic preservation programs in the United
States. Schools must be members of the National Council for Preservation
Education. Internship training programs in conjunction with the National
Park Service.

Serves as a clearing house for information, assistance, and programs for
preservation and rehabilitation in Illinois and oversees historic preservation
within the state. Every state has a State Historic Preservation Officer
appointed by the Department of the Interior to hold state preservation
records and to coordinate state-wide programs and grants and that officer
works out of the state historic preservation office.

Chicago Art
Deco Society
A non-profit membership organization whose mission is "to preserve
all things Art Deco." That includes housing, commercial structures,
and landscaping, Their periodical CADS covers architecture including Bloomington's
State Farm building and Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Regular meetings;
special events; speakers; tours of Chicago and other Midwestern cities.
A good way to talk to other Art Deco period enthusiasts.
McLean County Barn Group

A local group interested in documenting history and preserving barns in
McLean County. About 1200 remain from the 4500 barns in the county fifty
years ago.

The William O. Davis research library has extensive primary and secondary
research materials including photographs, inventories, newspapers, books,
albums, and pamphlets. Visual materials and written text can help with
identifying and dating your home and placing it within its historical
and cultural context.

A membership, non-profit organization focusing on preservation and rehabilitation
of pre-1940 buildings, landscapes, and neighborhoods. Services include
a library; a newsletter; annual house tour; a trade fair; a Warehouse
store of salvaged and restoration building components; a Restoration
Center to restore salvage items; and an Education
Center in the 1882 Charles Cantine house, which is being restored
to period authenticity.
Society for the Preservation of New England

Based in Boston this organization is a world leader in research and preservation
of buildings, landscapes, (and objects) from the seventeenth century to
the present. While focused on life in New England, much can be applied
to Central Illinois. SPNEA has a message board on topics such as old house
ownership and historic preservation. Offers a resource hot-line to answer
homeowners' questions on things such as maintaining old structures, dating
old houses, and styles of architecture.
Victorian Society of America

The only national organization specifically devoted to preserving 19c
heritage including design, architecture, and landscaping. A journal and
a comprehensive research library. The St. Louis chapter is the nearest
area chapter for programs, tours, and speakers. Web site has a link to
a list of house museums open to the public. Choose "Resources"
from the home page.
Vernacular Architecture
Forum
Interested in ordinary architecture? This membership with diverse interests
and backgrounds studies such things as traditional structures, agricultural
buildings, 20c suburban houses, settlement patterns. Interests of this
multidisciplinary group well suits the McLean County area with its blend
of rural, city, and suburban heritage.
