426 Linden

Ron Frazier and Tom McCulley

This brick ranch home was built in 1962 and while no records exist as to the designer or builder, the original owner, Robert S. Tomb, was an owner and home planner with the West Side Coal and Lumber Company. In the fifties and sixties West Side Lumber was very important to the built environment of Bloomington-Normal. Tomb was also involved in subdivision developments in Holiday Knolls and Northland and developed apartment buildings.

While not a typical International Design style, the home is furnished and decorated to emphasize a Mid Century vibe. The layout includes a den/family room off the garage, which the owners call “The 1970s Room.” The room is playfully painted in a multitude of colors over red oak paneling. You will observe a stunning art collection as you visit this home, beginning in this room.

The eat in kitchen has been modernized and furnished with a Mid Century table and chairs and colorful mobile. The dining area is entered through the kitchen or living room and is accented with a stenciled wall and mobile in the corner.

More Mid Century furnishings in the dining room and living room are complemented by the stunning art collected during the owners’ travels. The owners collect works by local artists, including Jeff Bess, whose work is displayed on an emphatic black wall in the living room. The original twenty pane picture window overlooks the garden designed by owner, Ron, and tended by Ron and Tom. In addition to art, the owners have a wide collection of World’s Fair memorabilia throughout the home.

One bedroom and the bathroom are open to visitors today. The bathroom has the original tile and a skylight. The current owners restored the back porch to be screened, as it had been originally built, to create a home for an indoor/outdoor lifestyle, which also typifies Mid Century design.

Please exit through the screened porch and enjoy a contemplative walk through the contemporary garden. You will exit through the metal gates, a creation of local artist, Doug DeLong.
