This home was built in 1930 for Dr. Theo and Clara Rost. No information is available as to the architect or builder of this home. Dr. Rost practiced dentistry in Bloomington all his life and lived in this home for over 20 years.
This brick home has an understated exterior but when entering, an elegant arched door faces the front door. This door hides a converted hallway, which has become a coat closet. To the left is the dining room and the kitchen. Beyond the kitchen is a sun room/family room added by a past owner with the assistance of local architect Harry Riddle. This stunning room filled with large windows, lends more light and space to the kitchen and invites the outside in.
On the opposite side of the front door is the living room. The living room fireplace is flanked by built-in bookcases that echo the shape of the closet door. Also on the first floor is a sun porch with unusual built-in bookcases around the line of the ceiling.
Upstairs are four bedrooms and two baths. One bath has original tile – black and white floor tiles and pink wall tiles. The original soap dish and paper dispenser have been carefully preserved by all past owners.
This house, even though only a couple decades newer than the houses on Monroe, reflects changes in lifestyle – no servants’ quarters, no servant staircase and a much simpler kitchen layout for a housewife’s convenience.
