About Our Warehouse
The Old House Society Architectural Salvage Warehouse is a hidden gem in Downtown Bloomington, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the world of architectural salvage. We are dedicated to preserving the rich history of buildings and structures in McLean County and beyond by reclaiming materials that might otherwise be lost. Inside our 5,000-square-foot warehouse, you’ll find a diverse collection ranging from vintage doors and windows to decorative moldings, antique lighting fixtures, tools, furniture, and unexpected pieces of local history. Each item carries its own story, creating a compelling experience for those who appreciate history, design, and craftsmanship.
The warehouse serves not only as Old House Society’s storefront but also as a valuable resource for those restoring homes or adding character to their spaces with authentic vintage materials. Our staff is available to offer guidance and assistance, and our on-site library provides additional resources for deeper exploration.
A visit to the OHS Architectural Salvage Warehouse is more than a shopping trip—it’s an experience rooted in history and creativity. Whether you’re a local resident or visiting Bloomington, a homeowner working on a restoration, or an artist seeking inspiration, there’s something here for you.
Donating Salvage Rights
Not every building can be saved. Due to neglect or damage, some structures become unsafe and must ultimately be demolished.
Old House Society relies on notification from property owners, demolition contractors, and municipal officials regarding impending demolitions of buildings and historic structures. Even in poor condition, many buildings contain materials that can be salvaged. OHS’s salvage team works to carefully remove usable items, which are then made available for purchase at our warehouse.
OHS follows a defined process for building salvage, including strict adherence to OSHA safety guidelines and controlled access to salvage sites. The organization maintains insurance coverage for property damage and personal injury related to salvage operations. Property owners and businesses who allow salvage prior to demolition may benefit from:
reduced waste disposal costs
diversion of materials from landfills
support for green building practices
potential tax deductions (as allowable by law) for donated materials
fast, efficient, and convenient removal
liability coverage
In many cases, buildings may still be used by fire and rescue organizations for training exercises after salvage has taken place. OHS can assist by ensuring that windows and doorways are properly secured.
